Bart De Baere, directeur du MULHA (Musée d'art contemporain d'Anvers) a été invité en 2006 à formuler les grandes lignes et le concept du festival de culture urbaine "City visions" à Malines. Par la suite quatre autres conservateurs du MUKHA l'ont aidé à poursuivre ces travaux sur les objectifs du festival et à concrétiser le projet.
Le fil rouge de l'exposition d'art contemporain All That Is Solid Melts Into Air (qu'on peut traduire par "Tout solide se dissout en air") est le paradoxe contenu dans les notions de spiritualité matérialiste et de matérialisme spirituel. L'idée retenue pour ce festival, City Visions, est en lien avec l'anniversaire de l'archevêché. La fonction d'archevêque présente un même contraste, dans la dualité de la spiritualité immatérielle et du pragmatisme matériel. Elle a concerné un diplomate politique qui a occupé le plus haut niveau du clergé.
Les artistes répartis en cinq thématiques explorent l'ensemble complexe des problématiques tournant autour du statut spirituel acquis ou pouvant être acquis dans notre ère "post-séculière". Car dans notre monde globalisé, démythifié après le règne des "Lumières", les individus sont en général perdus concernant leurs rapports aux impulsions religieuses et leurs aspirations bien humaines à la valeur ajoutée et à la transcendance, de plus en plus orientées vers le domaine des arts. Dans le contexte de l'art - le monde artistique, le travail artistique, ses pratiques et activités - nous sommes à la recherche d'une expérience qui semble devenue impossible ou du moins très difficile en raison de la démystification du monde. C'est en ce sens que le musée est considéré comme un temple ou un lieu de recueillement et de contemplation pour l'agnostique contemporain.
Le véritable artiste aide le monde en révélant des vérités mystiques - c'est l'avis de Bruce Nauman à la fin des années 1960 - blague ou pas, cela n'a plus d'importance, quand toutes les certitudes semblent actuellement s'évaporer une fois de plus. Nous pourrions remettre d'actualité cette déclaration audacieuse en suggérant que le véritable artiste peut aider le monde en posant les grandes questions encore et encore, sans peur ni hésitation - juste en fournissant une foule de petites réponses.

In 2006 Bart De Baere [Director of the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art MuHKA] was asked to assist in setting out the outlines and concept of the urban cultural festival City visions in Mechelen. Subsequently five curators of the MuHKA [including Bart De Baere himself] were deployed to further work out the objectives of the festival and to mould it into a concrete project.
All That Is Solid Melts Into Air is a contemporary art exhibition in the context of the cultural festival City visions in Mechelen, conceived by MuHKA. The red thread running through the project is the paradox contained in the notions on materialistic spirituality and spiritual materialism. In that sense it links up with the reason for City visions, the archbishopric's anniversary. For the latter implies a comparable contrast: the function of archbishop comprised the duality of immaterial spirituality and material pragmatism. It concerned a political diplomat who held the highest clerical office.
In five separate chapters the exhibition creators at the MuHKA explore the complex set of problems around the spiritual status that contemporary art has acquired or might acquire in our 'post-secular' era. For in the globalised, demystified post-Enlightenment world, people are generally at a loss as regards dealing with religious impulses and their all too human longing for added value and transcendence, and therefore focus more and more on the arts. In the ambience of art – of artistry and the work of art, artistic practice and activity – we are looking for an experience that seems to have become impossible or at least extremely problematic because of the demystification of the world. In this sense the museum too has been given the label of church or place for prayer and contemplation of the pagan present.
"The true artist helps the World by revealing mystic truths" was the opinion of Bruce Nauman – in jest or not, it does not even matter – in the late 1960s, when all the certainties actually seemed to evaporate once again. We might update this audacious statement by suggesting that the true artist is lending the world a helping hand by asking the Great Questions again and again, without hesitation or fear – and by providing many small answers.
